Bowen Technique

What is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue, fascial release remedial therapy. It was developed in the 1950's in Geelong, Victoria, Australia by Tom Bowen (1916 – 1982). The technique involves the therapist making gentle rolling movements with fingers or thumbs over muscle, tendon and fascia. These moves can be performed directly on the skin or if the client prefers through light clothing.

The aim of the Bowen Technique is to relax and re-balance the body, which can help to promote the relief of pain and speed up the healing process. Unique breaks are incorporated into the treatment, allowing the body to rest and re-balance itself.

Please visit the College of Bowen Studies for further information about the history of Bowen and find out more about how the Bowen Technique works with the connective tissue that lies under the surface of our skin called fascia.

What can Bowen treat?

Michelangelo's David pic.jpg

One of the main principles of the Bowen Technique is to treat the body as a whole. Therefore, if a client presents a pain in his/her neck then it is not necessarily just the neck that will be addressed. The reason behind this is because an issue in your neck can often be the result of another problem such as bad posture, knee problems or even a strained ankle. This is why it is so important to treat the whole person rather than the specific complaint.

These are some of the things the Bowen Technique may help. This is by no means an exhaustive list:

Back pain / Neck pain / Frozen shoulder / Tennis elbow / Repetitive Strain Injury / Carpal Tunnel Syndrome / Headaches and Migraines / Fatigue / Stress & Anxiety / Sports injuries / Knee and ankle pain / Sciatica / Asthma / Hayfever / Respiratory problems / Digestive problems / IBS / PMT / Bed wetting & Incontinence

The Bowen Technique has also been reported to help a number of factors:

Quality of sleep / Mood elevation / Ability to concentrate and focus / Positive outlook on life / Relaxation

FAQS

45 MINUTES - 1 HOUR: £40

My fee is £40 per session (A session on average will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour). Payment can be made by card, cash, bank transfer or by cheque.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments needed depends on the individual's requirements. I generally recommend that you book 3 initial treatments with me over 3 consecutive weeks as the technique will often start to show positive results after 3-4 weeks time. That said, some clients experience a positive change in their body after their first session. Chronic conditions may take longer than the average 3-4 sessions. Treatment plans are implemented following a full client consultation on your first visit.

Can I receive treatments if I am pregnant?

Yes you can however please wait until post 12 weeks pregnancy before visiting. Everyone can receive a treatment, even babies.

If you are having problems with infertility and trying to conceive then Bowen Therapy may help to relax the body during this process.

What shall I wear?

Please come dressed in comfortable light clothing. A t-shirt, lightweight top, light tracksuit trousers, leggings or shorts are all fine. Please do not wear jeans as these are difficult to work through.

How do I book a treatment?

Please call or email me if you would like to book an appointment or if you just have a general enquiry about the therapy. You can find my details above and on the 'contact' page.

Mixing therapies

It is strongly recommended that during the weeks you are receiving Bowen therapy you do not have any other form of therapy such as Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Reiki, and Reflexology (to name but a few). The reason for this is in order to allow the body to have time to repair and to monitor the effect the Bowen Technique is having on the client's body. By introducing other therapies it is difficult to work out which is working best.

Cancellation policy

If for any reason you cannot make your appointment please contact me as soon as possible. A cancellation that is less than 24 hours before your appointment will be charged at 50% of the fee.
